A CRITICAL ESSAY
After thrity years of hard work, what can I say about Jurica Varga? Much has already been said about him. It is hard to avoid saying something that has already been said before. Jurica Varga continues to attract new admirers of his painting by discovering some things about himself which have remained unknown so far. We shall never know a painter completely; there is always something new which surprises us. Jurica Varga is a man of nature. He is in love with the beauty which he tries to fix on canvas in order to halt the spectator and share the experience with him. The feeling for the landscapes of the Drava river in his paintings can be easily recognized in the play of the colours causing the lavishly painted sky to dip into airy waters, in a mild breeze murmuring in the crowns of the trees, or in swaying grass. His waters are easy going and soft, serving and transparent. The river banks are loose with gravel sediments, and compact where covered by grass and high shrubs. Some works are still lives, discovering his need to analyse the features the painted objects are made of. He is one among very few painters who has dared to "portray" animals. When I say portray, I do not only think of painting a dog, cat, horse, or a rooster. Rather, by knowing the animal, he is able to express its characteristic behaviour. What he tries to convey to a viewer is not only the very image of an animal but its stubbornness, sweetness, or its pride. He seems to be penetrating the very psyche of an animal in his desire to convey its view, movements, shape, and postures on the canvas. One of his most distinguished cycle is town images. We need not say what he has been attracted by in this respect. Each place has a lot of beautiful things to attract the attention of a painter and inspire creation in him. Inspired by details, he immortalizes them for later generations by his artistic purity. Within this broad spectrum of colours and diverse images, the viewer is compelled to reflect for a moment on all that Jurica Varga has to present to him within his artistic oeuvre as an artist and a man.
